Our battle begins

My home town is currently facing the worst maritime environmental disaster in New Zealand history. Last week cargo ship Rena grounded on a reef off the coast of Tauranga, my beautiful coastal home town. Since then over 3000 tonnes of fuel oil has spilled into the sea along with over 70 shipping containers after bad weather has caused the ship to to tilt.

Containers have started to fall into the ocean

Oil is already washing up on the Mount Maunganui main beach

Wildlife is already greatly affected and wildlife teams are doing all they can to save them

Oil spill from the air

I cannot tell you how devastated I am at all of this. Our country has a big clean up on our hands.
